Every couple is special, every baby is unique. This is our philosophy. We know very well that some cases are more difficult than others. So today, let’s talk about a case like that.
Our patient D. and her husband G.- not from Athens – had their initial consultation with fertility expert Dr Mantoudis at the end of 2018. D., 27 yo, has polycystic ovaries and her husband (36) was diagnosed with severe male infertility, which caused them, especially the husband, too much stress.
On their first appointment with Dr. Mantoudis and Dr. Natsis, after reviewing their fertility profile, the couple were determined to avoid a testicular biopsy that caused considerable stress to the husband. He took a series of semen analyses and the embryologists, after a long effort managed to find and freeze sperm.
After that the couple decided to have an IVF treatment. Despite the fact that they had good quality embryos they didn’t have a positive pregnancy test. The couple’s anxiety was getting bigger and bigger.
The course of the treatment was re-evaluated in the multi-departmental council of doctors and embryologists and new approaches were proposed. So, the couple decided to have the testicular biopsy that Dr. Mantoudis had suggested. Despite the fact that D. was very young, she had to do a hysteroscopy along with a series of blood tests so there was no factor left that could affect the treatment. On their new treatment, they had again good quality embryos that reached the point of blastocysts. Two of them were transferred, but they didn’t get a positive result again. But this did not stand in their way! They didn’t give up. On their next egg retrieval, D. had 22 eggs. The embryologists dedicated many hours on trying to find the right sperm for fertilization and fertilization resulted in a single embryo!
Despite the initial disappointment, a third day embryo was transferred and finally the positive result came! Now they hold their baby in their arms. The couple made it after several treatments, they overcame the obstacles so this is a special case that makes us proud.
The persistence, the will, the right guidance and a strong team can make it!
Stavros Natis-fertility expert comments: In this case, we realise how important a strong team is. Through the multi-departmental council, we have the opportunity to re-evaluate every case with a new perspective. Team work always brings better results.
Theoni Pastroma- manager of the embryologist lab comments: Even if the treatment doesn’t go as planned, the final result is judged at the end, with the pregnancy test. The “right” embryo can make it even if it is only one!
