One of the best-known fertility treatments is in vitro fertilization, also known as IVF. In IVF the patient’s oocytes are fertilized with sperm from the partner or donor outside her body, in a laboratory, under controlled laboratory conditions.
Infertility is a medical term to describe the inability to have a child. It affects men and women alike. All women, all men have their own unique fertility profile depending on their age, medical background and fertility test results. In women, fertility is tested by blood tests for hormonal profiling and also by ultrasound scan and hysterosalpingogram. In men, the most important fertility test is a semen analysis. There are further fertility tests for both men and women, depending on age, fertility history and basic fertility test results.
As described by ASRM, “in the current practice of IVF, some patients may create more embryos (fertilized eggs) than they need. The extra embryos may be cryopreserved (frozen) so that they can be transferred later. However, sometimes these embryos may not be used. These patients have the option to have their embryos discarded, donated to research or donated to another woman to achieve pregnancy.” It is a safe, reliable fertility treatment with high rates of success. Embryo donation is completely legal in Greece and the Greek assisted reproduction law protects donors’ identity, so that the donor never knows the child’s identity and the child never knows who the donors is.

The difference with classic IVF is that the ovaries are not stimulated to produce more oocytes. Only in some cases, minimal ovarian stimulation is required to obtain one or two naturally mature oocytes (modified natural cycle).
