The Role of a Midwife in Fertility Care: With You at Every Step of Your IVF Journey
By Anta Angelopoulou Midwife - IVF International Patients’ Coordinator
Every year on May 5th, we celebrate International Day of the Midwife.
For many people, the role of a midwife is closely linked with pregnancy and birth, but in fertility care our presence actually begins much earlier than that. We are often the first point of contact when someone decides to start their IVF journey, and for many, that first interaction carries a lot of weight. It is the first conversation they have after making such an important decision, the first moment where things start to feel a little more real, and often the first time they feel they can begin to understand what lies ahead.
As an international patients’ IVF Coordinator at Gennima IVF, every day I speak with women and couples, many of whom are reaching out from abroad and trying to navigate a system that is completely new to them. The distance itself often adds another layer of difficulty, as they are trying to make sense of everything from afar, without being physically present or familiar with how things work here in Greece. They are often dealing with different healthcare systems, unfamiliar protocols, medications they have never used before, time pressure, and of course a very strong emotional load. More often than not, what I hear in those first conversations is a sense of uncertainty and isolation, a feeling of “I don’t know where to start… and I feel like I’m doing this alone.”
That is exactly where my role begins. From the very first contact, the focus is to bring clarity where there is confusion, structure where everything feels overwhelming, and reassurance where there is doubt. IVF is not only a medical process, it is a deeply personal experience that affects every part of a person’s life, which is why communication becomes just as important as the treatment itself. When someone reaches out with a question about medication, a step in their protocol, or something that doesn’t feel clear, it is never just a task to be answered, but a person who needs guidance and immediate support in that moment.
Our responsibility is to make sure that no one feels like they are going through this journey on their own. Because in fertility care, supporting you is at the heart of our role - not an extra service.
Throughout the IVF journey, we focus on providing clear step-by-step guidance so that every patient knows exactly what comes next, fast and reliable communication because uncertainty should not be part of this process, personalised support that recognises every individual as a person and not a number, and practical day-to-day guidance that covers everything from medication to procedures at every stage.
At Gennima IVF, our goal has always been not only to support the treatment itself, but to support the person going through it.
To all the incredible midwives working in fertility care—your precision, dedication, and emotional strength make this possible every single day.
And to everyone on a fertility journey:
you are not alone in this process. From the very first step, we are here with you.
